Reykjavik Whale Watching Diary May 21st 2012

by Magnus on May 21, 2012

What an AMAZING tour we had this morning!! :D We headed out to the whale area and didnt have to wait at all for the Minke Whales to show up! They were all around us and surfacing a lot…then we found a really fun Minke that was feeding and showing itself a lot, then and all of a sudden it breached showing the whole body, what a wonderful sight and it repeated this 2 more times! This usually doesn’t happen for the Minke Whales, so it was very special sight, and we hope it will still be around for the afternoon tour:)  We saw even more Minke Whales on the way back and there were also a lot of Terns around. The view out on Faxaflói Bay is great today, weather lovely and you can see traces of ash in the air that has travelled with the wind, guessing its from around where we had last years volcano activities in Grímsvötn.

One of our many Minke Whales today

Just landed after breaching for us…what a sight!!! Unfortunately we didnt catch it on camera when it jumped…

This one is heading towards us spouting water out of the blowholes!

Everyone enjoying the Minke´s and the sun :)

Tour @ 14:00

We went out again hopeful for another show like this morning. We did see Minke Whales again and surfacing quite few times, but no one breached for us. It was a bit more windy and that might have affected the viewings. We also had more ash in the air making the view to surrounding areas less but it is still amazing to see how it has fogged up the city. We had lots of sea birds such as Terns and also Gannets diving into the sea. On the way back we passed Akurey to see the Puffins, they are always such a nice sight! :)
